Working with Children and Families
Having been a parent to a child with autism and complex additional needs for nearly as long as being a psychologist, I have had a lot to learn about patience, perseverance, hope - and finding what works. I know that one size never fits all. Interventions have to be skilfully adapted to suit the child and family. They must be purpose-built. Happily there are numerous evidence-based techniques and strategies that can make the journey much easier, and sometimes, change the destination altogether.
From 2014 to 2019, I was instrumental in devising and running a parent support service, Family Matters, for the disability charity RUILS. This service made RUILS the runner-up in the Richmond Business Awards for Best Charity (2017). I have a passion for supporting parents and helping them to find answers and create interventions that work for their particular child.
Assessments
I can offer formal assessments with a written report for the following:
- Developmental conditions including Autism and ADHD
- Emotional and social difficulties such as anxiety, depression and behavioural problems
If you think you may need a formal assessment for your child, please email me for a free telephone consultation. Assessments tend to be booked far in advance.
Treatment Interventions
In our first meeting, I will recommend the best evidence-based intervention for your child or family, and how long it is likely to take, depending on the problem. If I go on to work individually with a child, I ask the parents to attend regular feedback sessions where I will discuss and demonstrate strategies for you to try. Parents who feel supported and not judged, are able to come up with their own solutions in the long-term. I am here to teach you the skills and trouble-shoot any difficulties step-by-step until you feel confident.
Some typical things that parents ask for help with:
- Psychoeducation after a diagnosis of Autism or ADHD
- Finding new parenting techniques for managing behaviour
- Managing a child's anxiety or depression
- Helping a child build social competencies and relationships
- Helping a child or family work through a difficult experience or loss
- Changing unhelpful family patterns
Interventions are specially adapted for children or teenagers with Autism."I would recommend Linda to any struggling parent and their children."
"She has shone a light on my daughter’s difficulties and how to manage them."
''I have so far had a breakthrough result using one of the techniques with my son, so I am thrilled.''
